History of Sigiriya

Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock is a historical location in central Sri Lanka. It is said to be the ruins of the palace built by King Kasiyappa in the late 5th century. It was once known to be a monastery which was later turned into a palace by the King.

The story of this ancient rock takes you back to the 5th century AD. If we go back to Sri Lanka’s ancient history it came into place due to a tragic relationship between  two brothers Kasyapa and Moggallana. Even though Moggallana was the rightful ruler, the throne was illegally taken by his brother Kasyapa. This made his brother flee the country and escape to India.

Kasyapa was afraid his brother would come to recapture the throne so he fled to Sigiriya  from Anuradhapura and made it his capital. It was later on captured and destroyed by his brother. Even after all these years that have passed it’s ruins still stand. Telling the ancient story of a rock that once was a home of a king.

Even though King Kasyapa was defeated he left his legacy behind. The Lions Paws Sculpture

Lions Paws Sculpture would be visible as you go up through the mirror wall stairway. Sigiriya gained its other name “Sigiriya Lion Rock” due to this sculpture found at the entrance. Only the paws remain of the once massive lion head that used to stand at the entrance. Before it was destroyed the stairway that leads to the top  was said to start  from the lion statue’s mouth.

The Water Gardens

As you make your climb up you would come across several water gardens. They consist of tanks, pools that were once used for baths and pavilions used during dry seasons.

The Boulder Gardens

These boulders are found at the base of the Sigiriya rock and can be viewed well from the top of the fortress. They laid the foundations for monastic structures of ancient history.

The Sigiriya Museum

The Museum is located 200 meters away from the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. The museum contains a variety of exhibits that highlight ancient history.  A model of the stronghold and a reconstruction of the frescoes are also on display in the museum along with some of the writings from the Mirror Wall.

Mirror Wall

This wall was once used by the King to see his own reflection. The beautiful poems display  the literacy value of ancient times. Most of the poems are addressed to women where their beauty was praised by men. This wall holds the thoughts of the ancient centuary.

Sigiriya normally has a tropical climate. Therefore it’s warm most of the year. Here are some information on the weather changes during months for you to plan your perfect day for a visit.

March to May 

These months are considered to be very hot  in Sigiriya. These months show the highest temperature and  they vary between 34.9°C and 32.2°C. Normally about 3 to 4 days experience rainfall during each month.

June to August

This is the best time to visit Sigiriya. The highest temperature of this time period is about 34.9°C and it could reduce to 23.7°C. Weather during these months are the best days for paying a visit due to its humid climate.

September to November

Rainfalls are experienced during these months and the temperature varies between  33.3°C and 29.7°C. The constant rainfalls has reduced the number of tourists visiting during these months

December to February

The average temperature is about 29° C. These months experience rainfall 5 to 12 times a month.

Best Time To Visit Sigiriya

Sigiriya’s Rock Opening Hours

Sigiriya is open from 7am till 5:30pm throughout the year. If you are planning on a visit, the fortress could be explored at your own convenience. It is better to be an early bird to avoid the sizzling midday heat and catch all those beautiful moments  with minimal crowds.

How much does It cost to visit Sigiriya?

The cost varies based on a local and a foreigner. For a local it would cost about 50 rupees and a foreigner has to pay 30 USD to enter Sigiriya.

How long does It take to climb the Fortress?

Normally it would take a person an hour or so to reach the top. If you start the climb during peak hours you might take longer than an hour. Also if you are more keen on exploring all these ancient details and taking photos of what this rock displays it would take you longer than expected but why hurry such a beautiful experience? Enjoy the climb at your own pace as you pay attention to all the amazing unique concepts the ancient fortress shows off.

It is better to start the climb in the early hours where the raging heat of the sun in the afternoon won’t be able to tire you out. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes. Wearing Flip flops is not a good option since it could turn out slippery during the climb.

How do you get to Sigiriya?

Bus

Traveling in a Bus is the cheapest mode of transportation. Buses in Sri Lanka run at regular intervals so it won’t be difficult for you to catch a bus and get to Sigiriya.

Taxi

Taking a taxi would make your journey more comfortable and faster. Even though the cost will be higher than public transport, you can reach your destination with ease. Uber is also another option apart from Taxi’s and normally cheaper as well. It would take you about 4 hours in total to travel.

Tuk tuk

Traveling in Tuk tuk is also another cheaper option. You could either rent out the vehicle and travel as you wish or you could travel with a driver based on your liking and they are normally cheaper than taking taxis.

Beat the heat!

Make sure you carry plenty of water with you, since it will help you stay hydrated during the heat as you make your climb up.

Wear the right outfit

Modesty is the trend here. Light, breezy clothes and a hat are your fashion essentials. Wearing comfortable clothes would make your climb much easier.

Footwear
