Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is basically a beach that has a history of its own.

The southeastern coast of Sri Lanka is actually the home to Arugam Bay. Which is a fantastic beach destination that locals call as “A-Bay.” 

Arugam Bay really started as a small fishing village. That has now changed into a popular tourist spot by keeping its original character. 

Anyway, while it’s most famous for its great surfing spots, there’s much more to discover in here. 

In fact, you’ll find everything from old Buddhist temples to areas full of wildlife by making it perfect for both thrill-seekers. And anyone who is interested in exploring the local culture.

Arugam Bay Beach

The main beach in here is the heart of Arugam Bay, with its beautiful golden sand that curves along the coast. 

If you’re into surfing, you’ll love it here from April to October when the waves are most calm. 

But even if surfing isn’t your thing, there’s plenty to enjoy. 

In fact, early risers can watch the local fishermen bringing in their morning catch. Which gives you a real sense of how people have lived here for generations.

Moreover, the beach is especially beautiful at sunset, when the sky fills with orange and purple colour tones that give a different vibe around. 

Plus, you’ll find palm trees all along the shore where you can relax in the shade. 

On the other hand, the southern part of the beach has lots of restaurants and cafes right on the sand. Where you can eat fresh seafood and have drinks while watching surfers with their actions. 

Anyway, if you prefer some quiet time, head to the northern end. This is because it’s usually much more peaceful and perfect for morning walks.

Pottuvil Point

At the northern end of Arugam Bay, you’ll find the Pottuvil Point, which is one of the best places to take in the coastal views. 

This rocky area is both a natural landmark and a popular surfing spot. 

Reaching here is something interesting as well. Where you can get there by walking along the beach or taking a path through thick coastal plants. 

However, keep your eyes open during the walk. This is because you might spot monitor lizards, peacocks, and many different tropical birds which are not very friendly to humans.

Anyway, from the point, you can see the entire bay and the Indian Ocean that stretches out. 

If you are into photography, we are sure that you will spend a lot of time here to capture some wild shots.

In fact, photographers love coming here early in the morning to capture the sunrise. 

Moreover, the water around the point is quite full of sea life creatures, which makes it great for snorkelling when the conditions are right. 

Elephant Rock

Elephant Rock stands out against the coastal area, and it’s a massive rock formation that many people come to photograph. 

It got its name because it looks like an elephant from certain angles. 

Also, it takes about 20 minutes to climb to the top, and once you’re there, you can see everything around you. These include jungles, beaches, and the ocean.

Anyway, there are certain times that you can get the perfect scene around.

In fact, the best views are at sunrise or sunset, when the natural sunlight makes everything look spectacular. 

Moreover, at the bottom of the rock, people often have picnics or do yoga, and experienced surfers catch waves nearby as well. 

In rare cases, sometimes wild elephants walk around the area, especially early in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Kudumbigala Monastery

The Kudumbigala Monastery has been around since the 2nd century BC and tells us a lot about Buddhist history in Sri Lanka. 

In here, you’ll find it about 12 kilometers from Arugam Bay which is on top of a rocky mountain surrounded by the forest. 

Speaking of which, the monastery has several caves with old writing on them. 

Moreover, there are places where monks meditate and an unusual cylindrical dagoba that looks different from other Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka.

Since this place is quite far from everything else and very peaceful, it’s perfect for anyone who wants to interact with their spiritual side. Or just take a break from the beach. 

Here’s something interesting: Monks still live and practice here, so you might see them taking part in their daily activities. 

Muhudu Maha Viharaya

Muhudu Maha Viharaya is an old Buddhist temple complex that’s connected to the story of Princess Viharamahadevi.

You can find this place in Pottuvil, just a few kilometers from Arugam Bay, right near the beach. 

At Muhudu Maha Viharaya, archaeologists have found evidence that the temple has been here since the 2nd century BC. This proves to us that it is one of the oldest Buddhist places around in Sri Lanka.

Moving on, once you are inside the temple complex, you’ll see important religious items like old stone pillars, guard stones, and Buddha statues. 

Also, people believe this is where Princess Viharamahadevi came ashore after being sent out to sea as a sacrifice to stop floods in her father’s kingdom.

When you visit Arugam Bay, you’ll find that it is much more than just surfing in the ocean.
