The city of Nuwara Eliya was established in the year 1846  by Lake Albert who was an explorer.  History of this city generally begins in 1818, when Dr. John Davy found it as a location with a climate comparable to that of England, as well as a location suitable for hunting. Due to the city being located at a higher elevation in the mountains its temperature became suitable for various cultivations such as vegetables and tea plantations.

Transportation

Train and Bus 

You can take the train from Fort  and get off at the Nanu Oya station. From here you can take a taxi to Nuwara Eliya which would be an hour’s journey. This train journey would take you about 6 hours and 15  minutes. A lot of travelers enjoy the train ride due to the beautiful scenery along the way. The beautiful tall mountains, waterfalls and valleys will immerse you into its beauty and the passing of time is never felt.

You can also take the bus from Colombo to Nuwara Eliya. There are air conditioned and non air conditioned buses. You could book one based on your preference. It would take about 5 hours and 30 minutes to reach the city. Traveling by train or bus is affordable if you are looking for a cheaper mode of transport.

If you choose to take a taxi it would take you about 4 hours and 30 minutes. Even though it would cost you more you will be able to reach your destination with ease and comfort.
